Pot of chocolate
Pot of chocolate
We had arranged everything for an early leave up to the moment in which we are informed about the fact that the transport has been postponed until further notice as a patient must be taken to the hospital in Haydon. Also this is Africa. Better not plan anything without a very wide margin of time!!
So this morning we had the time to go for a walk in the hospital, with a big pot of Belgian countrywoman's chocolate. Great is the surprise when tasting a spoonful of black chocolate (honey, jam,... what, chocolate paste? You use it on a cake?)
Most of the patients are doing well. The young 22 year-old mother, the one with twins who developed a sickness after her Caesarean section still is not improving, and I fear that within short, her children will have to face live without their mother. Already now the feeding is partially taken over by other mothers who show solidarity giving milk, artificial feeding does not exist here due to the great risk of preparing it with polluted water and the high purchase price. In general, in this place, there is a maternal mortality of about 1 in 100 births, despite the application of many agents.
Everybody hopes that we will come back for a fourth time, in order to support the centre, but this of course does not only depend on us. Here, we have already seen a whole evolution and the staff confirmed yesterday that a follow-up generation will be trained who is willing to take over the torch in a few years.
I conclude with a big thank you for the people at home who again and again ensure that I can be a part of this all. A big kiss!!
