The hospital Caraes in Ndera are aware of the growing problem of substance misuse particulary dual diagnosis ( co morbidity of mental/physical health and substance misuse). The hospital are currently caring for 6 dual diagnosis patients. The issuse of complex needs arises as mental health patients are often vulnerable to substance abuse and HIV. Caraes hospital is creative in developing services to meet these complex needs and are keen to employ Kigali Health Institute students on their graduation.

Hello, I've just come across your astonishing article about mental health in Rwanda, published in the Guardian in April, 2004. As a future mental health practitioner myself (in the United States) I wonder if I might ask you a couple of questions about coordinated interventions for trauma survivors. Please reply to me at my email address if you wouldn't mind engaging in a brief email conversation. Many thanks, Adam Benjamin PS. Your blog is impressive -- clearly you're doing great work!
Hi Sue, Interesting to read more about substance misuse and the complex consequences on the health system in Rwanda. I've added some nature pictures to your blog because I know how much you love he nature of Rwanda. Greetings! Bieke
