Ma mission neurologique à Kigali

Voilà l'histoire de ma mission à Kigali du 22 janvier au 6 février 2011. Cette mission comportait trois volets :

Completed teaching in Kigali Health Institute

Third year mental health students completed the second part of the curriculm on substance misuse. Second exam tomorrow, student life in Kigali is demanding.

De Afrikaanse schoonheid...

Substance misuse training

De wonderen der Afrikaanse natuur.

Training at Kigali Health Institute on schedule. Started teaching the substance misuse part of the curriculm. Students very interested in this topic. We discussed the safe use and abuse of alcohol with the treatment required for dependence on alcohol. The problem of alcohol misuse is well documented here, the students were able to recount many of the physical, psychological and social effects of alcohol misuse.

Teaching G3 at Kigali Health Institute

Teaching the class the basics of emergency care in psychiatry.

The class were well enaged and active in the learning - they were given the task of planning the care for patients in various emergency situations. When the care plan was complete each group presented to the whole class and took questions. One students was the designated photographer.

A good day teaching.

Teaching started

Teaching started today - psychiatric emergencies, 28 students at Kigali Health Institute in their final year. I am impressed by their knowledge of neurology they were familiar with synapses, various neurotransmitters and a range of medication.

Warm Welcoming Rwanda

Good to be back in warm Rwanda- Ndera calm and welcoming as ever. Spent today in the Brothers of Charity community as it is womens day and the Government announced a holiday - so no teaching today.

The birds are always a source of interest in Rwanda- the hadedas are the early morning alarm. They are nesting in the tall trees along the boundary of the compound - a very precarious, noisy process. Little blue wax wings busy them selves in the undergrowth while the mouse birds run along the branches.

Getting ready

Preparing to leave the UK.

"Thank you Sue for blogging! I have added some pictures of your last mission, I hope you do not mind. Greetings, Bieke"

Informatie over dit ziekenhuis

Description

The psychiatric centre is 17 kilometres east of Kigali. It belongs to the Brothers of Charity and is the only psychiatric centre in the country.
Our volunteers take the time to retrain the medical and paramedical staff in the hospital in order to improve hospital organisation and provide better case histories and diagnoses.
The post-genocide psycho-trauma after April 1994 led to a huge shortage of qualified staff for psychiatric care.

Only €1000 of material is provided for each mission to this centre. In view of the nature of the missions, this is mainly teaching material rather than surgical material.

MWV is working together closely with the BVL, of course, but we are also trying to inform the people from the National Mental Health Project (PNSM - Projet National de Santé Mental) and the BTC of our missions with the aim of trying to improve co-operation between the state and the BVL in the field of mental health care.

A school for psychiatric nurses is joined to the CNPN. This is a fully fledged department of the Kigali Health Institute (KHI).
In consultation with, and at the request of, the BVL manager for the school for psychiatric nurses, MWV is sending medics and paramedics to teach certain courses for the trainee psychiatric nurses.
It is clear that we are working together here with the BVL and the KHI.

Results of the missions

In the field of neurology, there is a great need within the hospital for ongoing support, certainly for the opening of the new neurology department within the hospital. There is still also a need for support in the field of child psychology. In the Ndere training centre, the teams will continue to provide teaching.
During the assessment mission at the end of 2007, the mission objectives for the next 3 years in the hospital and training centre were refined in consultation with the partner. Seeing that there is now a local psychiatrist and a local neurologist, we do not anticipate any increase in our projects.
