Description

The hospital is situated in a village of about 40,000 inhabitants 350km north of Lubumbashi, on Lake Mweru. It is the only centre for people with a handicap for miles around.
The centre for the handicapped belongs to the bishopric, but the running of the centre is the result of a partnership between Caritas Congo and Caritas Austria.
MWV and Caritas complement each other’s work: Caritas Austria helps manage the centre and MWV supports the medical and paramedical staff. During orthopaedic missions, the staff learn how to deal with polio and other orthopaedic disorders.

Results of the missions.

The people in charge of the centre for the handicapped in Kilwa have requested two orthopaedic missions for 2008. The accomplishment of these missions is heavily dependent on the season and due to the state of the road it is not always possible to get there by car. This is why MWV has established good relationships with Anvil Mining, which flies the teams free of charge to Dikulishi, 60km from Kilwa. MWV provides full teams here, including a physiotherapist.

In line with the MWV philosophy, the aim is to introduce the local medical staff as effectively as possible to the basic principles of surgery, especially orthopaedics. The partnership with the centre offers access to certain treatments which would otherwise not be possible for patients with innate or post-traumatic disorders.. Since post-operative recovery and the rehabilitation period take a lot of time, and taking account of the internal capacity of the centre, we think it is better (having consulted the local partner) not to plan more than 2 missions a year. There is also continuous work to be done in the area of physiotherapy.
