Hartverwarmende luisterbereidheid
Op een ijskoude winteravond (3 december, het vroor -7 °C) trotseerden in Sint-Martens-Leerne deze vrouwen (en ook 2 mannen niet op de foto) de bittere kou om te luisteren naar een voordracht met beeldmateriaal over Artsen zonder Vakantie. Ik (in Afrikaanse klederdracht) vertelde over Artsen Zonder Vakantie en mijn missies. Hetzelfde verhaal vertelde ik ook aan de journalist van de Artsenkrant, met een mooit artikel als resultaat.

Gert reisde mee met Koen naar Kongo. Hij heeft er ook zijn hart verloren. Hij schrijft over wat Koen in Lubumbashi meemaakt:
"'s Avonds aan tafel zie ik Koen, net terug van een intensieve dag lesgeven. Hij vertelt mij dat hij de "compensatoire mechanisme bij cardiale insufficiëntie" (of zoiets) heeft uitgelegd aan een 70-tal dokters."
"Ik moet aan iedereen de groeten doen van Koen. Het lokaal waar hij les gaf, werd te klein voor het aantal studenten dat nu op 200 (sic) staat, de tamtam werkt hier letterlijk goed."

Description
This hospital has developed into a high-quality centre due to the unstinting efforts of its driving force, President Willy Bonduel, who has now returned to Belgium for health reasons. The outpatient clinic is now in the hands of a Congolese non-profit agency. It has 125 beds and is very well maintained. There are numerous possibilities at their disposal and, in fact, it is the equal of a hospital in Europe. There is a high level of occupancy. 7 doctors work here full time. There are about 60 nurses and 11 other paramedics, including laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology.
The centre is one of the few, if not the only one, in the entire city where laparoscopic surgery can be carried out. The MWV teams have introduced the local staff to these skills. In addition, there has also been a specific request for training in various medical disciplines (e.g. cardiology and gastroenterology). The managers of Afia allow patients from Wote Pamoja centre for the handicapped to be operated on by MWV teams on condition that they can be transferred immediately so that there are no hospitalisation costs. MWV does in fact meet part of the costs of the operations. In addition to the children from Wote Pamoja, patients from Lubumbashi are operated on as well, of course.
Results of the missions
A laparoscopic mission will be planned in which the skills already learnt will be assessed as well as the condition of the material needed for this. Furthermore, internal medicine will also be given the necessary attention in the form of a cardiology mission.P.S.: The infrastructure of the outpatient clinic will also be used to operate on patients from Wote Pamoja (see above) for orthopaedic and reconstructive surgery (see under Wote Pamoja). The partnership with the outpatient clinic will continue in the same manner, but there will also be consideration as to whether other disciplines should be represented.
The outpatient clinic will also continue to offer its services to Wote Pamoja for operations which are required by patients from the centre. It is less likely that WP itself will be in a position to perform surgical operations correctly in the WP centre itself.
