Zending Bangwa

Beste Vrienden,

Information about this hopital

Description

Bangwa hospital is a good 30km to the south east of Bafoussam, which is a drive of about 45 minutes. The hospital is a district-referral hospital, which is incorporated into the national health system.
Dr. Jean-Claude Henang, who studied public health a few years ago at the University College of Leuven, has been in charge since August 2005 when he replaced the retiring Dr. Henri Nomigni. Dr. Henang was previously general co-ordinator of the Protestant hospitals, a task for which he is still responsible, but which he carries out in addition to his present management position in Bangwa.

This hospital has been in existence since 1931 when it was opened by Paris Evangelical Mission (“La Mission Evangélique de Paris”), a French Protestant mission. The vast majority of the medical staff were Europeans until the time of independence. After independence, the Dutch were still active there in the 1980s. Later, the European presence in the hospital disappeared completely, whilst the Cameroonian staff have continued up to the present day.

The hospital has about 350 beds with an occupation rate which fluctuates between 30% and 60% (average 45%) or 8,000 to 10,000 patients a year. This hospital and the state hospital are the only ones in the region, which has about 130,000 residents; about 10,000 people live in Bangwa itself. Patients also come to this hospital from far beyond the boundaries of this region because of its relatively good reputation. There are 3 doctors, 2 generalists, and the manager who has also worked in Public Health. The other 128 members of staff include 24 nurses and 42 nursing auxiliaries (‘aides soignantes’).

The hospital also works together with the University College of Leuven, which regularly sends 6th year students for 4 months.

Results of the missions.

Co-operation with Bangwa hospital dates back to 2006. In the meantime, the 2 doctors, the gynaecologist, and the surgeon have left the hospital. Surgical operations are carried out by an “attaché de santé” (a nurse with a lot of experience in surgery).

Co-operation will be discussed further during the planned assessment visit in 2008. The local partner has indicated that the maternity department is in need of assistance.
