Information about this hopital
Description
The hospital in Yakoma is not so accessible and this is a hindrance to missions. Nevertheless, there is a great need for doctors from the CDI Bwamanda to work together with MWV. There is clearly a need for doctors to be given sound basic training. The nursing school, too, needs a nurse with teaching experience to teach in the school for one month.Gynaecology may be necessary, but we are not sure at the moment. Missions are planned from 2008, but we cannot promise anything for sure after that.
The hospital is part of a ‘triangle’ of hospitals which are affiliated to the CDI. These three hospitals, which are all located within a health zone, are Abuzi, Wapinda, and Yakoma.
There are two doctors connected to the hospital (Dr. Potin and Dr. Hyacinthe). Furthermore, there are also 5 A3 nurses, 1 A1 nurse, and 7 A2 nurses. The hospital has 91 beds at its disposal with an occupancy rate of 90% (their figures). Judging from the guided tour of the hospital, the occupancy rate seemed closer to 70%. There are 8 private rooms available. The different departments and the number of beds are as follows: gynaecology and obstetrics (10+8), intensive care (13), paediatrics (13), and internal medicine and surgery (24+24).
Results of the missions
The doctors presently working in Yakoma are very young doctors. There is a clear need for training as regards both surgery and internal medicine.Surgery will still be necessary.
It is possible that internal medicine will be replaced by gynaecology. For the nursing school, too, a nurse will be asked to provide training for one month.
There is a dire shortage of nurses with teaching skills. These missions also depend on the assessment made by the volunteers on the ground.
