Information about this hopital
Description
The management of this state hospital has been put into the hands of the bishopric. Kikwit numbers about 450,000 inhabitants. There are 3 hospitals in the city and this one (HRG) is the biggest. It is situated in the north of the city and has 344 beds in use, with an occupation rate of 56%.The hospital functions (relatively) well and, thanks to its extensive range of services, it attracts a large part of the region. However, it has struggled to repair the dent in its reputation which arose as a result of the ebola epidemic which devastated the region in 1995.
Memisa operates in this region in 14 health zones and was responsible for the request. MWV carries out missions here in partnership with Memisa.
The hospital has 325 beds in use at the present time. There are 120 new consultations a month. Every month, 25 new cases of Sida are diagnosed. There is a budget to provide for the very poorest people. The prices which patients have to pay are displayed clearly to provide transparency. A total of 273 people work in the hospital, including 15 doctors, but 5 of them are on study leave.
Results of the missions
Our partnership with this hospital had been suspended in late 2006 and early 2007 because the local management were no longer accepting responsibility. However, in June of this year, the newly appointed managers came knocking on the door of MWV and they even took the trouble to visit the MWV medical supervisor for consultation during the supervisor’s visit to Kinshasa. Unfortunately, we heard during August that the health director had passed away, but the hierarchy have confirmed that they wish to work together in the same spirit. And so, the agreed plans are being pursued further. There has been a request for three missions a year because the team of doctors is quite young. In addition, there has been a request to train the technical nurse with regard to anaesthetics. There is a centre for the handicapped which functions quite well. That is why there has also been a request for one orthopaedic mission. This will be planned for 2008 or 2009, depending on the report given by the volunteers who carry out a mission. This is why the number of missions will not be increased for this partnership. It involves a regeneration of an old partnership and in this respect wee need to look at the reliability of the partner and its absorption capacity. In such cases, MWV must still exercise caution.
