Information about this hopital

Description

The hospital is situated in the province of Kasaï Oriental, district of Sankuru, in the territory of Katako Kombe. The health zone (ZS) Katako Kombe is part of the bishopric of Tshumbe and the health district of Lodja.
The hospital (HGR) acts as a referral hospital for the health zone Katako Kombe (surface area: 8,500km²; population 93,000; 14 Health Centres ((CS)), 3 Referral Health Centres, and 22 Health Units). The hospital is located well away from the health zone, and this means that certain CS are more than 200km from the HGR.

The health zone has at its disposal a health zone central office (Bureau Central de Zone de Santé - BCZS) in the hospital grounds. The health zone is organised in such a way that the HGR is an integral part of the health zone and that people from the  BCZS and the HGR are part of the health zone corpse (‘équipe cadre’).

At present, the bedding capacity is 42; this will be increased to 66 in 2007-08 (a department with 24 paediatric beds is under construction); the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is funding an extension to the gynaecology department, probably in 2008.
Bed occupancy levels over the past year have been high.
The HGR has been thoroughly renovated in recent years. Construction of a new department for surgery and in-patients will be considered, if the resources are made available.
The health zone has 3 doctors at its disposal, two of whom work mainly for the hospital and one for the health zone. In 2007, a new administrator with the required ability was appointed. The other workers (too many!) in the HGR are: 10 A1 nurses; 10 A2 nurses; 22 A3 nurses; and 34 others, most of them part time.

Results of the missions

A partnership with MWV is certainly possible in the present circumstances and the request has come explicitly from the doctors and administrators of the HGR. It can be guaranteed that patients will be carefully recruited in advance, that the doctors from the health zone (and possibly from surrounding health zones) will be present during the MWV missions, and that there will be close co-operation. Specific agreements can easily be made regarding whether or not the work carried out will be remunerated.

There is a particular need for basic surgery, if possible basic gynaecology, preferably in missions lasting at least two weeks on site. Further consideration can be given later to the opportunity to send a specialist in creating images (echography or radiology) or in anaesthetics.
