Description

Kangu Hospital is a good day’s drive from Kinshasa. It is better and faster to take the daily flight (except for Sundays) from Kinshasa to Boma with Filair.
The hospital lies in a health zone covered by 8 other hospitals and 11 health centres. A population of a good 73,000 people are served directly by the hospital, but in the whole of Mayumbe the population is estimated to be around 500,000.
It is a poor area and the hospital’s income is derived mainly from consultations, hospitalisations, research, and the sale of medication. Its largest expenditure comes from paying staff. The hospital buildings radiate the glory of yesteryear, but everything is worn out, and this is the reason why MWV supplied basic material for the operating theatre on its first mission in 2004. The MWV teams have conducted 8 missions since then.

Result of the missions.

It is absolutely essential to continue with the improvement of basic surgical techniques and patient follow-up in the surgery department: basic knowledge and skills in patient care are often lacking. The surgical team which returned from Kangu in the spring of 2007 feels it is absolutely essential first of all to concentrate on basic surgery and leave other disciplines to a later stage so that gynaecology and orthopaedics can be considered as exclusive specialities. The improvement of the quality of the current laboratory is also a priority: the integration of the students from the neighbouring laboratory assistant school is equally a priority and they will be invited on each mission to attend both theoretical and practical training sessions. Following the assessment mission in the spring of 2006, in consultation with the local partner and following the feedback from the returning teams, we will be concentrating further on basic surgery and basic health care whereby we may, depending on the advice of the teams and the local partner, replace one of the two surgical missions in 2009 and 2010 with gynaecology or orthopaedics and at the same time add an additional surgical mission. These missions will still be maintained with nurses who will be responsible for post-operative care, the functioning and organisation of the operating theatre, and general nursing care. Attention will still be paid to increasing laboratory capacity so that the quality of the research carried out there can be maintained.
