Information about this hopital
Description
Monvu hospital is one of the referral hospitals which also comes under the management of the Bukavu Diocesan Bureau for Medical Research (BDOM). The hospital in Monvu is located on the island of Idjwi (27,615 hectares large, or 320km², or about 90 x 40km) and some 142,213 people live there.
The hospital is the only referral hospital on the island and it lies in the south of the island. Midway across the island there is the Central Hospital of Bugarula, which has 2 doctors. There are also 5 health units and 20 health centres, all staffed by nurses and sanitary officers.
The Order of Malta also has plans to open the Central Hospital (CH) of Kikumba in the north of the island. The roads on the island are very poor and this means that people sometimes prefer to come by boat to the General Referral Hospital (HGR) of Monvu than by road.
The hospital is part of the health zone of Idjwi itself and currently has 99 beds with an occupancy rate which fluctuated around 98% in 2006.
If one also includes the Binyola (the centre joined to the hospital where pregnant women go before they give birth), there are a good 130 beds.
The hospital has two doctors with some experience and a third doctor has started working there just recently. There are 43 members of staff all together.
There is an ITM joined to the hospital, but it numbers only 16 students: most go to Katana or Bukavu due to the limited opportunities.
The hospital has just about all the classical services under its roof: medicine, surgery, paediatrics, maternity, and a centre for undernourished children. The latest surgical activities take place here, but specialised pathology cases have to be referred to Katana or Bukavu.
Results of the missions.
Monvu hospital is a new partner hospital and also comes under the BDOM Bukavu. The motivation of the management and the present, global operation of the hospital should offer sufficient guarantees for sustainable co-operation and an increase in the capacity of the present staff. The medical staff are very young and they themselves admit that they are able and willing to learn a lot more.
The number of missions will gradually increase so that the efficiency of the hospital can improve in the coming years. This will mean that the population of the island will be able to come here for more surgical operations.
