De laatste kleine overwinningen...
Maandag 5 mei 2008 :
Information about this hopital
Description
Bwamanda hospital is the major referral hospital in the region: it lies in the north of the province of Equateur and is about 75km to the south-west of Gemena. It serves a population of at least 195,000 inhabitants. It is a referral hospital with 242 beds; the hospital is part of the programme of the Bwamanda Centre for Integral Development (CDI - Centre de Développement Intégral) and, as a referral hospital, also receives subsidies for its action plan. It is an efficient hospital (6,782 hospital admissions or an average of 48 a day) with a reliable reputation and it offers a wide range of services (all the classic services are available). It is accessible for the vast majority of the population from the region.
A large nursing school is also associated with the hospital. The medical staff consists of 5 doctors. 35 nurses make up the paramedical staff.
At present, the CDI is responsible for the following zones: Yakoma, Wapinda, and Abumumbazi in the north and Bwamanda, Businga Boto, and Mabuya in the south-west.
There is a health insurance service with which 60% of the population in Bwamanda is registered, whilst in Yakoma this figure is about 40%. This system ensures that the population has easy access to the hospital.
In 1997, MWV carried out its first mission in the hospital of Bwamanda as part of the operations of the CDI Bwamanda. The situation in the country during this period (the end of the Mobutu regime, the dawn of the Kabila era, and the division of an area by JP Bemba) made it impossible to undertake any further action in this region. The operations of the CDI Bwamanda also suffered greatly at the hands of the prevailing conditions.
2008 is our fifth working year in the hospital of Bwamanda. We are working together with the NGO CDI Bwamanda, which manages the hospitals in Bwamanda and Yakoma and with which the programme of the missions is being considered.
Results of the missions.
The doctors who are working in Bwamanda at the moment are Young doctors. There is a clear need for training. There is a need for an infectiologist to supervise correct diagnosis and treatment and to give training in these fields. For the laboratory, too, there is a need for training for the laboratory technicians. Once the first audit is complete, it will be decided whether or not a clinical biologist will have to go or whether we will work first of all via laboratory technicians in order to send a clinical biologist at a later stage. For the nursing school, too, a nurse will be asked to provide training for one month. There is a dire shortage of nurses with teaching skills. For 2009, an ophthalmology mission has been requested because the nurse is doing a training course in Kin and there is a need for it. Surgery will still be necessary. The laboratory, too, will probably still require some attention. The skills learnt have to be assessed. There will be a cardiology mission to make an assessment of previous missions. The nursing school has asked for someone with experience of overseeing a work placement.
These missions also depend on the assessment made by the volunteers on the ground.
