Information about this hopital

Description

This hospital is located on the road between Parakou and Natitingou in the province of Atacora. It is an autonomous hospital, which is owned by the Order of Malta of France and is a member of AMCES. The hospital has 76 beds and receives considerable material support from the Order of Malta. In late 2002 and early 2003, an audit was carried out in the hospital by the Order of Malta. This led to internal restructurings which, for a while, threatened the continuity of the MWV activities.

In recent years, the hospital has gone through a period of positive change and is presently awaiting state recognition as a ‘district hospital’. It has all the classical departments: a surgery department, a medicine department, a paediatric department, a laboratory, an operating area with 2 equipped theatres, and a nutrition centre. There are specific plans to build a new delivery ward and maternity department. At present, 10 doctors work here and they all have their own specific task and area of speciality. They make up an extremely dynamic team. A permanent gynaecologist has also been appointed.

This hospital is the only one which operates properly in the entire region and is always extremely busy. It is an attractive, large, and clean hospital. The resources are administered in the correct manner and the material is well maintained.

Results of the missions

During the assessment mission in 2006, a clear request for closer co-operation with MWV was formulated. The doctors have said that the MWV teams bring a wealth of knowledge, material, and, especially, great dynamism which greatly motivates others. The staff wish to benefit as much as possible from the arrival of MWV. Several members of staff have only just left school and therefore need assistance and training. Nurse training and support are also required, both for care before and after operations and organisation in the departments.

After the assessment in 2006, it was decided in 2007 to increase the number of missions from 1 to 4 a year. There is no further increase in the number of missions planned before 2009. A maternity mission is planned for 2010, if the construction of the new maternity and delivery department is complete and the department is fully operational.
