Description

The province of “Extreme North” has 28 functional districts, 8 of which are covered by the project of the Belgian development Co-operation Agency (BTC). A few years ago, this province was subdivided amongst different co-operation initiatives (e.g. Italy and Switzerland). Belgium has taken care of the central part (i.e. 8 districts) around Maroua, which has a total population of 1,300,000.
The Hospital of the District of Guiduigis (Het Hôpital de District de Guiduigis - HDG) is one of the 6 hospitals which is supported by the BTC project. It was also at the request of the BTC that a partnership was set up between the hospital in Guidiguis and MWV.

In the district of the HDG, there are 10 health zones (‘Aires de Santé’), each with their own health centre (CS). The HDG is a small district hospital with about 40 beds. The hospital is not particularly extensive and consists only of five buildings. The whole unit gives a well kept impression and is very clean. The hospital has just about all the classical services: surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, and maternity. There are 2 doctors, 12 nurses, and a number of temporary staff.

The BTC is planning to use the HDG as a training centre and operating base in partnership with MWV. The 5 other hospitals within the BTC project can send their doctors and nurses to the HDG for in-service training whilst the MWV teams are present. Patients will be selected and recruited from the 5 other hospitals and 96 health centres before the arrival of an MWV team. The BTC project in this region was due to come to an end in 2007.

Results of the missions

The partnership with the hospital in Guidiguis is still relatively new. Our presence and work are greatly valued by the local people and authorities. It is especially important that they recruit basic pathologists so that the emphasis is mainly on training and perfecting skills.

A prospective visit and assessment is planned for 2008. An increase in the number of missions is planned in the province of ‘Extreme North’ because there is an urgent need there. This extension should be implemented in one of the 4 other hospitals which are supported by the BTC project. The missions in the hospital in Guidiguis gave MWV the impulse, but other hospitals (e.g. Mindif and Kaélé) had also asked for a partnership with MWV.
