Kimbondo october 2011
This time in Kimbondo, an impressive pediatric hospital connected to a no less enormous orhanage complex, we were an exceptionnal team of 6.

Information about this hopital
Description
This paediatric centre was founded by Dr Laura Perna, an Italian paediatrician who was a specialist in bronchial complaints, and was supported later by a Father Clarétain and Padre Hugo Rios, who was a co-founder. It lies on a scenic hill just outside Kinshasa on the road to Matadi. It is mainly children abandoned at birth who stay here until the age of 18. It started as a nutritional centre, but has gradually expanded. It consists of a ‘hospital’ section (with various wards, depending on the pathological disease) and a residential section with different little houses divided into age groups.
The abandoned children are brought in, for example, by the city council of Kinshasa, mayors from Bas-Congo and Bandundu, hospitals from Kinshasa (including neonatal cases, for example!!), and by those who are confronted with such a child or, if necessary, want to abandon it. New cases stream in every day. At present, there are about 150 sick children and about 250 abandoned children (orphans). The children who are obliged to attend school are sent to schools nearby. A number of severely handicapped small children with neurological abnormalities are taken care of here (paralytics, spastics, living and dribbling like plants). A new ward has now been built for them.
3 doctors work here permanently and specialist consultants come once or twice a week. This is what happens for cardiopathy, nephrology, ophtalmology, and orthopaedics. The cost of this is quite high, so the aim is to train the doctors. There are 91 members of staff all together. There are 40 consultations a day on average, according to figures supplied by the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP). There is an entire ward for tuberculosis.
Results of the missions
The primary need of the Kimbondo centre is training for the general doctors in specific paediatrics. The laboratory is splendidly equipped, but is used insufficiently. Blood transfusions are carried out using a blood bank, and the laboratory is well equipped for this. The laboratory is underused, but the question here is whether it is possible to use it more in view of the current staff database. The mission laboratory will give further clarification in this matter. The results of the first mission will determine whether or not a second mission is necessary or whether there needs to be a reorientation. An increase in the number of missions from 1 to 2 can be provided for this partnership.
This depends on the conclusions of the previous missions. And so, the planning will be executed somewhat cautiously on the basis of a status quo, but this can be adapted.
If necessary, attention will have to be paid in the future to wards for the handicapped on the one hand as regards physiotherapy, but also to diagnosis and medication for the neurological cases.
