Description
The missions of Dr. Richard Hardi have been partly incorporated into the operation of MWV in the current five-year programme. This is an excellent example of the south-to-south operation which we support, if possible.Dr. Richard Hardi provides one mission to Mwene Ditu every year. In view of the great need and the huge population around Mbuyi Mayi (the second largest city in Congo!), Dr. Hardi could not continue to refuse the calls that were being made upon him to do something for the population of this major city.
He has used other funds to open an Ophthalmology Centre where he himself performs operations a few times a year. For the rest of the time, this centre is staffed by a few nurses who carry out consultations and simple operations in his absence.
MWV supports the operation of this centre through the integral missions of Dr. Hardi in this centre both materially and logistically.
Subtitle: Results of the missions.
We have been asked to continue supporting Dr. Hardi’s ophthalmological missions to this centre. In addition, there has also been a request from the secluded Kole to tackle the ophthalmological problems of the Batwa people (pygmies). We wish to support this mission further as an extension of the work in Mbuyi Mayi.We also aim to continue supporting this centre in the future and alternative assignments which arise from this operation (cf. Kole). Dr. Hardi has already asked us to send a Belgian colleague sometimes in response to the numbers of patients coming to the centre and also as part of the training of the ophthalmological nurses. This means that the number of missions can be increased by 1 mission.
