Completed teaching in Kigali Health Institute
Third year mental health students completed the second part of the curriculm on substance misuse. Second exam tomorrow, student life in Kigali is demanding.
Substance misuse training
Training at Kigali Health Institute on schedule. Started teaching the substance misuse part of the curriculm. Students very interested in this topic. We discussed the safe use and abuse of alcohol with the treatment required for dependence on alcohol. The problem of alcohol misuse is well documented here, the students were able to recount many of the physical, psychological and social effects of alcohol misuse.
Teaching G3 at Kigali Health Institute
Teaching the class the basics of emergency care in psychiatry.
The class were well enaged and active in the learning - they were given the task of planning the care for patients in various emergency situations. When the care plan was complete each group presented to the whole class and took questions. One students was the designated photographer.
A good day teaching.
Teaching started
Teaching started today - psychiatric emergencies, 28 students at Kigali Health Institute in their final year. I am impressed by their knowledge of neurology they were familiar with synapses, various neurotransmitters and a range of medication.
Some students articulate about the difficulty of studying due to the problems of accommodation and paying fees - it is the same the world over.
Warm Welcoming Rwanda
Good to be back in warm Rwanda- Ndera calm and welcoming as ever. Spent today in the Brothers of Charity community as it is womens day and the Government announced a holiday - so no teaching today.
The birds are always a source of interest in Rwanda- the hadedas are the early morning alarm. They are nesting in the tall trees along the boundary of the compound - a very precarious, noisy process. Little blue wax wings busy them selves in the undergrowth while the mouse birds run along the branches.

Het psychiatrische centrum ligt op 17 kilometer ten oosten van Kigali.
Het psychiatrische centrum behoort toe aan de Broeders Van Liefde en is het enige psychiatrische centrum van het land.
Onze vrijwilligers maken tijd voor de recyclage van de aanwezige medische en paramedische staf van het ziekenhuis om te komen tot een betere organisatie en een verbeterde anamnese en diagnose.
Door de situatie na april 1994 (post-genocidair psychotrauma) is er een groot tekort aan gekwalificeerd personeel voor de psychiatrische zorg.
Voor dit centrum wordt slechts € 1000 per materiaal per zending voorzien. Gezien de aard van de zendingen is dit geen chirurgisch materiaal maar vooral didactisch materiaal.
AZV werkt nauw samen met vanzelfsprekend de BVL maar wij proberen ook steeds de mensen van het PNSM (Projet National de Santé Mental) en de BTC te informeren van onze zendingen om hopelijk de samenwerking tussen de staat en de BVL op het gebied van geestelijke gezondheidszorg te verbeteren.
Aan het CNPN is een school voor psychiatrische verpleegkundigen verbonden. Deze is een volwaardige afdeling van het Kigali Health Institute (KHI).
In overleg met en op vraag van de BVL verantwoordelijke voor de school voor psychiatrische verpleegkundigen stuurt AZV medici en paramedici voor het doceren van bepaalde cursussen voor de verpleegkundigen psychiatrie in opleiding.
Duidelijk is dat we hier samen werken met de BVL en het KHI.
Resultaat Zendingen:
Op gebied van de neurologie is er vanuit het ziekenhuis een grote vraag naar blijvende steun zeker bij het opstarten van de nieuwe dienst neurologie binnen het ziekenhuis. Ook blijft de vraag naar ondersteuning op het gebied van kinderpsychiatrie actueel. In het vormingscentrum van Ndera zullen de teams verder blijven lesgeven.
Op de evaluatie zending eind 2007 worden de objectieven van de zendingen voor de komende 3 jaren in het ziekenhuis en het vormingscentrum in overleg met de partner verfijnd. Gezien er nu ook een lokale psychiater is en een lokale neuroloog voorzien wij geen toename van onze acties.
