Information about this hopital
Description
MWV has been working here since the 1990s, as it has Afia. There was a renewed call to operate on handicapped children as a result of the mission for the introduction of the Fixateur Externe, early in 2002.
The handicapped children from the centre are operated on in Afia and are taken immediately to after the operation to Wote Pamoja (7 kilometres from Afia) in order to avoid hospitalisation costs.
The centre has been in existence for a good 20 years and is run by laypersons, who also work in the centre. Chantal Baise, the driving force and founder of the centre (now back in Belgium), has urged the bishopric to provide people or establish a congregation to run the centre, but so far there has been no response.
In addition to handicapped children, CVA patients and paraplegic patients also receive treatment here.
Results of the missions.
The people in charge of the Wote Pamoja centre for the handicapped have requested two orthopaedic missions for 2008. The missions provide care for a group of people who would otherwise have no access to hospital facilities. Two specific disciplines, namely orthopaedic and reconstructive surgery, are still a priority. The continued existence of the centre will depend largely on the extent to which other stakeholders present themselves in the near future to take some responsibility for management. In line with the MWV philosophy, the aim is to introduce the local medical staff as effectively as possible to the basic principles of surgery, especially orthopaedics. Since post-operative recovery and the period of rehabilitation take a lot of time, and taking account of the internal capacity of the centre, we think it is better (having consulted the local partner) not to plan more than 2 missions a year.
