Messages from this hospital

Onze laatste dagen in Rwanda

Information about this hopital

Description

The centre for the handicapped is located in the south-eastern part of Rwanda about 80 kilometres from Kigali. It is the most neglected region of Rwanda, on the border with Burundi.
It is a relatively small centre with 150 beds and it is financed partly by the Italian association “Augere” and partly by Don Gnocchi. The centre belongs to the bishopric and in 2004 was officially recognised by the state.
The centre is very well equipped: some consumable material has been purchased for the orthopaedic missions.
Thanks to our persuasive consultation with the Italian association Augere, they have now engaged a surgeon in training. This Rwandan doctor does consultations and operations there once a week. This means that there is a medical presence, continuity in the care, and someone who follows the MWV teams.
The centre is developing increasingly into a referral centre for paediatric orthopaedics in Rwanda, and MWV is doing everything possible to support them in this.
Since 2005, the organisation Don Gnocci has also been active in the centre. At the request of Augere, they are providing extra support in the field of management and they have also released financial resources to organise the centre even more. Whenever we inform the  Liliana funds of our mission, they are always happy to be able to supply extra patients.
In 2007, there was consultation with Don Gnocci and Augere to make some clear agreements:
  • DG will concentrate on the orthopaedic surgery (including material), radiology, CBR, and management. From 2008 onwards, they will also cover physiotherapy.
  • Augere will provide technical support (technical material and structural material), financial support, CBR, and will maintain the infrastructure.
  • MWV will send specialist orthopaedic teams (with consumable material for operations and post-operative care).

Results of the missions

The training of Emmanuel, the staff of Rilima, and the organisation of the centre has certainly been a successful project which deserves more follow up.
Since 2004, we have only sent orthopaedics who specialise in paediatric orthopaedics.  The in-service training in the field of anaesthetics has been very effective since the anaesthetists who work in Rilima also work in the CHUK and provide training there for the new assistant anaesthetists: trainees are training others.
Project recovery has been postponed: in the ward there is a room for patients in the poorest condition to be monitored more closely (with oxygen supplies).
The Secretary of state for public health.
