Description

Via contacts with Dr. Geert Vannneste, MWV has been asked to work together with this hospital to train the local staff.

The CCBRT centre is extremely well equipped and concentrates on the rehabilitation of the handicapped. They have generalists who already have some training and carry out operations, but they also rely on support from foreign specialists for specific types of pathology: vesico vaginal fistula (VVF), innate orthopaedic abnormalities, and plastic surgery. It is here that MWV has expertise and will commit itself further.

We are working in this centre together with CBM which has installed the infrastructure and has specific needs regarding specialist training.
We had expected to achieve our objectives with this partner in 2007:
The operating area is finished and is well organised.
Paediatric orthopaedic cases can be given proper treatment.
During this final mission in 2007, the skill of hydrocephalic operations will be perfected.

Results of the missions.

During the mission in 2007, it emerged that there was a pressing need to continue this partnership despite earlier intentions to bring it to an end. The reasons for continuing the partnership are as follows:
  • there is a good partnership with mutual appreciation;
  • there are specific proposals for the areas where we are able to work together;
  • there is a genuine need;
  • CCBRT is aiming to present itself more as a training centre for the entire region and MWV can provide extra help in this respect;<
  • there is a big need for training because, amongst other things, there is a high staff turnover so that new staff need to be trained;
  • representation in the capital is important for MWV’s credibility and reputation;
  • little material support is required from MWV;
  • the well equipped centre and precise organisation secures the faithfulness of MWV volunteers.
La proposition est de prévoir un envoi plastique et un envoi eurochirurgique en 2008.
The proposal is that we provide 1 plastic surgery mission and 1 neurosurgical mission in 2008. The neurosurgery project requires follow-up. The staff are not equipped to deal with this adequately seeing that they do not know the anatomy or physiopathology of the nervous system. Repeating learning to detect subdural hematomes as a result of  overdrainage and cysts is recommended. Plastic surgery should be given more assistance, depending on the results of the first mission in 2008.
